Sérgio Carneiro has a bachelor degreee in History - Variant of Archeology by the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (1995). He worked as an independent archaeologist until 1999 in Algarve, Lisbon, Santarém and Aveiro.

In 1999, Sérgio Carneiro founded the archeology services of the Municipality of Chaves.

He's the Scientific Director of the Study and Valuation Project of the Roman Healing Spa in Chaves, since 2006.

Between 2002 and 2007, he was the Chairman of the Professional Association of the Archaelogists (APA).
